A song of love and fate echoing under the starlight

On an early summer evening, a path winds its way between poplar trees and bamboo forests. Following that path, you come upon an outdoor theater, naturally blended into the wild grass and flowers. On May 23 and 24, the 2025 Concert for the Beautiful World was held at the F1963 outdoor stage in Busan, offering the audience yet another unforgettable night. This year’s featured performance was Donizetti’s opera Lucia di Lammermoor. The sorrowful melodies of this tragic opera resonated under the stars, moving the hearts of the audience and creating a deeply emotional experience.

The true essence of opera embraced by nature

Since 2015, the SeAH Woon Hyung Lee Foundation has carefully selected opera performances that are easy for the public to access and enjoy, presenting them under the theme “Opera Bucket for a Beautiful World.” Starting in 2022, the foundation has partnered with Cultural Foundation 1963 to host outdoor opera concerts in Busan, bringing the beauty of opera to even more local residents.

This year’s featured work was Lucia di Lammermoor, a masterpiece by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti. Based on a novel by Sir Walter Scott, the opera tells the tragic love story of Lucia and Edgardo, whose families are bitter enemies. The performance vividly portrayed themes of love, betrayal, madness, and fate, drawing the audience deeply into the emotional world of the story.

The outdoor setting at F1963 added a special atmosphere to the performance. As the sun set and the stars began to appear in the night sky, the audience experienced the opera surrounded by nature. The gentle breeze and the sounds of the evening blended beautifully with the music, creating a magical moment unique to an open-air stage.

Lucia di Lammermoor is especially famous for the “Mad Scene,” one of the most iconic moments in all opera. In this scene, Lucia loses her sanity after being forced into a loveless marriage and murdering her husband. The soprano’s emotional and technically demanding performance captivated the audience and received enthusiastic applause.

Stars of the stage, cheers from the audience

This year’s performance featured world-class singers and performers. The role of Lucia was performed by soprano Lee Myungjoo, whose delicate emotional expression and outstanding vocal technique deeply moved the audience. Tenor Kim Youngwoo played Edgardo, delivering a passionate and powerful performance. Their chemistry on stage heightened the emotional intensity of the opera.

The Busan Philharmonic Orchestra and the Noi Opera Chorus also contributed to the performance with rich musical expression and dramatic harmony. Under the direction of conductor David Yi, the orchestra beautifully conveyed Donizetti’s lyrical melodies and emotional depth.

The audience responded with enthusiastic applause throughout the performance. Many spectators remained in their seats long after the final curtain call, reluctant to leave the magical atmosphere of the evening.
